Strongylodon macrobotrys
The Jade Vine
Native of the tropical forests of the Philippines.
S. macrobotrys is an evergreen twining vine, prized in
tropical and subtropical gardens for its showy flowers.
The aquamarine color of the jade vine's flowers are
very unique and hang in bunches up to 90cm long,
pollinated in its natural environment by bats which are
a highly unusual blue-green.They form amongst lush
tropical foliage.
S. macrobotrys is It is usually trained over a pergola,
arch or trellis in tropical landscapes, so that the
flowers may hang down below where they can be seen
easily.
The Jade Vine prefers sun with some shade during
the midday and afternoon sun. It performs best where
its roots are in the shade and its top in the sun.
Water is to be applied freely during the growing
season, Spring- Summer and sparingly in winter.
Jade vine grows best in neutral to acidic soils.



- Saraca is native to India and Thailand to Java and
throughout SE Asia.
- Height to 10m with an open rounded canopy
- Found in monsoonal tropics along banks and streams. Saraca
thaipingensis is slow to moderate in growth. Saraca prefers
partial shade when young, thrives in a position protected from
the predominant winds with space, humidity and plenty of
moisture in a rich slightly acidic soil. It flowers at least once a
year, in late winter to summer.
- This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds, the
flowers are fragrant especially during the night
- Long pendulous new growth emerges as soft pink leaves slowly
stiffen to green. Flower heads are large, up to 45cm, and bright
yellow, developing straight from the trunk.
- This gorgeous tree should be fertilized at the drip line with an
organic based product and heavily mulched twice a year, once
before flowering in the spring and once again at the end of the
wet season.
- Propagation -Saraca thaipingensis does produce seed in long
burgundy coloured pods it can also be marcotted.
